Abstract

The ecological integrity and sustainability of urban mangrove ecosystems are threatened by marine waste and especially plastic. This study examines a non-destructive technique to estimate the amount of marine debris and plant density in an urban mangrove forest. Field surveys, held from September 2024 to January 2025, were conducted across distinct hydrodynamic zones, showing that plastic accounted for up to 95% of the total debris, with the highest concentrations being observed in zones with dense mangrove stands and limited water flow. The proposed method leads to targeted debris removal and better management strategies, which combine waste reduction and the maintenance of healthy mangrove ecosystems.
